Basic function of position:
The incumbent carries out skilled maintenance and repair work to the facilities electrical and
generator systems throughout the New Embassy Compound (NEC) buildings, grounds and
residential owned/leased properties. Receives written or verbal request for maintenance
services as ascertains all of the necessary information to determine whether the work is of a
routine or emergency nature.

WORK HOURS: Full time – 44 hours per week

SALARY: Ordinarily Resident (OR): RD$395,645 p.a. (starting salary)
** (USEFM) Not-Ordinarily Resident (NOR): US$36,111 p.a. (starting salary)
** (MOH) Not-Ordinarily Resident (NOR): US$30,991 (starting salary)

pay plan)

The U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo is seeking an individual for the position of Maintenance
Mechanic (Generators) in the Facilities Maintenance Section.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and
comprehensive information supporting each item.

1. Completion of two years vocational training program from an accredited institute repair
and maintenance of standby generator and/or uninterrupted power supply systems are required.
One year of journeyman level mechanical maintenance specializing in standby generators can
be substituted for one year of education.

2. Three years of experience as a repair mechanic or maintenance technician working with
power generators are required.

3. English level III (good working knowledge) (speaking/reading/writing); Spanish level III
(good working knowledge) (speaking/reading/writing) are required.

The Office of Human Resources will contact for testing purposes ONLY those applicants
that meet all other requirements.

4. Skills in the following areas: diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, large generators
and alternators; testing electrical components and taking equipment readings with various
meters, hand, power, and specialty tools to determine appropriate repairs, installation of
emergency standby generator systems; installation of plumbing required for diesel fuels;
distinguishing frequencies and sounds, color codes and odors in the operation of equipment in
order to troubleshoot for repairs, responding to emergency situations in an efficient and timely
manner to effect immediate repairs; work in various adverse conditions such as tight or
enclosed spaces, heights, and temperature extremes, indoors or outdoors to complete work
assignments; communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, contractors and vendors to
obtain and provide pertinent information.

5. Written and verbal skills to communicate complex technical details to other facility staff
and managers in both English and Spanish, computer and basic mathematics skills are
required.

6. Valid Dominican driver’s license category 2 is required.

ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA THAT MAY AFFECT THE FINAL HIRING DECISION
INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: NEPOTISM, BUDGET, CONTINUITY IN THE
POSITION, STAFFING GAPS, AND/OR THE NEED FOR THE APPLICANT TO HAVE A
SECURITY CLEARANCE.

SELECTION PROCESS

When fully qualified, U.S. Citizen Eligible Family Members (USEFMs) and U.S. Veterans are
given preference. Therefore, it is essential that the candidate specifically address the required
qualifications above in the application.

ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA

1. Management will consider nepotism/conflict of interest, budget, and residency status in
determining successful candidacy.

2. Current employees serving a probationary period are not eligible to apply.

3. Current Ordinarily Resident employees with an Overall Summary Rating of Needs
Improvement or Unsatisfactory on their most recent Employee Performance Report are not
eligible to apply.

4. Currently employed U.S. Citizen EFMs who hold a Family Member Appointment (FMA) are
ineligible to apply for advertised positions within the first 90 calendar days of their employment.

5. Currently employed NORs hired under a Personal Services Agreement (PSA) are ineligible to
apply for advertised positions within the first 90 calendar days of their employment unless
currently hired into a position with a When Actually Employed (WAE) work schedule.

6. The candidate must be able to obtain and hold an unclassified security clearance.
